This usually means finding a nearby culinary school that offers such classes. No matter where you live, a quality school is more than likely a short drive away.
You’re not looking for classes that are over and done in a day. Rather, you need to look for a cooking class that meets at least twice in one week, preferably three times. This way, you’ll get as close as possible to what goes on at a cooking school. It’s important that the class you take covers some type of cooking unfamiliar to you. This is a cheap way of simulating the pressure you’ll face in a professional course. Granted, working a few nights in a kitchen is far from the intensive experience you’ll undergo in a full-time culinary program, but it should be enough to get your blood pumping and give you a taste of what you’ll be doing day in, day out.
Taking a cooking class generally gives you a small taste of the curriculum at a cooking school and should help in your career decision. You could also talk to owners of commercial kitchens in your area about volunteering or working there for a while. Universities, hospitals and government buildings all have commercial kitchens, as do restaurants and hotels. Taken together, these two activities should form a firm basis upon which you can decide whether or not to pursue a culinary arts career.
