When learning how to cook, it’s a good idea to start with the cooking basics. Anybody that has some common sense can do simple math, and follow directions can learn how to cook. You will find that you will be able to prepare and serve a delicious meal that your family will enjoy. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look like something Betty Crocker prepared, but it will taste good and please your family. There are a few things you will need in your kitchen to get started.

Utensils and pots and pans. Every cook should have these items, and while there are products available that will cost you thousands of dollars, here are some basic things to start with. No matter what kinds of pots and pans you will use, get them with non stick surfaces, including any baking pans and cookie sheets. They will be much easier to clean, and use, and the greater the quality, the easier the food comes away from the surface.

You will also need some utensils such as knives, spoons, whisks, and measuring cups. It’s also a good idea to purchase a basic set of mixing bowls. Metal bowls are much easier to clean and maintain. You will need both metal and plastic spatulas, larger forks and spoons. You should have two can openers; one that removes the inner lid so you can drain things like canned tuna, and one that removes the entire top, leaving no rough edges.

Cooking 101 requires the use of some very basic staples that you will need to keep in your pantry. These are items you will use almost every day when learning the cooking basics. You will need salt and pepper, and some basic herbs and spices like Cinnamon, Oregano, Garlic, Onion Powder, and more. You can usually find basic spice sets at large retail stores or kitchen supply stores.

You will need some sugar, flour, baking soda, baking powder, light brown sugar and some powdered cocoa. You can find websites that provide detailed lists needed for cooking basics. You can also find recipes that you can try on many websites, but remember to start of small. You can also order some great cook books that will be helpful for years to come.

You’ll find that cooking charts are very helpful. They can be used as a quick reference to find out the temperature you need to cook meats and poultry at as well as how long to cook them. These charts also include other useful facts. You will find charts that provide detailed measurements for weight, volume, etc. You can find useful charts online that can be downloaded and printed. Precise measurement is important to the quality and taste of the food you prepare.

You will be able to stay organized if you keep all your cooking basics information in a binder. You can put all the recipes you get from family, friends, magazines, and the newspaper in the binder. If you care for it properly it would be a great thing to pass on to your children.

You can find these tips and many more online, at your local library, and even local retailers. Many community colleges offer classes in cooking basics, as the way up to advanced chef courses. There are many cooking career opportunities available as well.
