Can a video game really teach you how to cook? You’ve probably never considered picking up a video game to learn how to cook or try new recipes. However, Nintendo has created several video games with cooking as the main focus. Their goal is to get more families off the couch and in the kitchen with several titles available for their portable game system–the Nintendo DS.
If you’d like to test your skills in the kitchen against a famous chef you should give What’s Cooking? with Jamie Oliver a try. This game includes 100 recipes which you can try cooking both on the Nintendo DS and in your own kitchen. You can also share other recipes with friends and family using the Wifi connection. Most people think this game does better as a virtual cookbook but either way it’s definitely a challenge and a lot of fun.
If you’d like to learn and master the art of fine French cooking you might be interested in Gourmet Chef: Cook Your Way to Fame. Adults would probably enjoy this game more than children. Although if you have a child that is serious about cooking they might also appreciate this game more than a kid who just wants to have fun playing a video game. In Gourmet Chef you’ll learn many tasks with the stylus which you can later apply to real recipes.
There are several games to choose from in the Cooking Mama series. In the original game you use the stylus to create many different recipes while you compete against other chefs for the gold medal. One of my favorite features of this game is being able to cool down hot dishes by blowing into the Nintendo DS microphone. Once you start playing this game it can become very addicting.
Personal Trainer: Cooking would be a great gift for someone just learning how to cook or for someone interested in trying different types of recipes from around the globe. This game is more like a cookbook that comes to life with videos and descriptions of every ingredient you need for your recipe. Instead of a competition, Personal Trainer: Cooking focuses on learning new tasks and recipes. You can even make your shopping on the DS and take it with you to the store.
Believe it or not but there are many other cooking games available for the Nintendo DS than those listed in this article. Even though you might not have considered owning a Nintendo DS before, these cooking games have attracted a whole new audience to the world of hand-held video game consoles. If you’d like to learn how to cook and don’t have time to sort through all kinds of books, magazines, or websites you might want to give some of these games a try.
