Seeing as I don’t happen to live anywhere close to what you would call a metropolis, boredom often provokes me to search for something exciting to do. Also, the economy’s decline has sent us as a family into the need of a stricter budget. Taking a trip to the local dollar store can supply you with whatever you are looking for by necessity or saving money, or the fun to looking for things to do.

As I ventured through the particular store in my hometown, I was shocked to see how many items they had in stock that I would normally purchase at another store for quite a bit more money. Luckily whether you live in Oregon, Texas, California, Utah, or somewhere else, you cannot be without a dollar store. I want to share my finds to maybe help all of us save some extra bucks this summer.

My ten month old son and I were most surprised to find how much they had in store for him. I was so excited to see how many baby items they had. With all the little essentials a small person requires, I have saved quite a bit a money.

For example, I found sippy cups, small spoons, bowls, and bibs for his eating needs. They also had onesies, wash cloths, and socks. All these items can add up to a large expense, so for one dollar a piece, it’s well worth it to come to the dollar store for them instead.

Besides taking care of my baby, I spend a great deal of time cooking. I really enjoy making food and especially eating it. Of course, the cooking is only fun if you have the right utensils to help you. This also seems to be an expense that I am at a loss for at the current state of the economy.

Here at the dollar store, the wall was filled with every possible contraption for use in the kitchen imaginable. I finally have my zester, a grater, basting brush, whisks, spatulas, and mashers. My spoon drawer is now filled with a spoon for stirring, serving, ladeling, straining, and even eating soups. Don’t worry about expensive knives, because they can supply you with what you need for paring, steaks, butchering, dicing, and slicing. Your culinary masterpiece is no longer just in your imagination.

Your kitchen also isn’t complete without items like cling wrap, aluminum foil, casserole dishes, or large bowls. Also, the table can be adorned with cloth napkins, place mats, matching dish sets, and glasses that believe it or not are not disposable material. They come in glass and sturdy plastics from even possible color and design to choose from.

Also take a stroll down the cleaning aisle for rubber gloves, brushes and scrubbers to help keep your house tidy. Don’t forget cleaning supplies from bathroom cleaner, to window cleaner, and even easy to use wipes for any surface. Whether your dusting, mopping, scrubbing or sanitizing, your supplied amply in the dollar store.

Have I mentioned that all the above items are a mere dollar a piece. Think of how that compares to even the furthest rolled back prices of any department store. Especially now, dollar store frugality can afford to be overlooked. Find all your treasures at your next trip there.

There are some key options to keep in mind when you’re in the market to buy gas grills on sale. Every year, during late Spring, people start feeling the itch to get their grills on and start cooking or to buy a new gas grill and accessories to continue or start their grilling carreers. In shopping for a GAS GRILL, you’ve surely come across names like Weber, Ducane, Brinkman, Coleman, etc.. All these gas grills have several basic features that make for a great grill and will help you choose from all the grills on sale.

The first thing that should come to mind when thinking about grilling is heat distribution. Successful grilling and BBQ is dictated by even heating. Different techniques that manufacturers use to control heat distribution through the grate surface are ceramic briquettes, vented metal plates, and porcelain-coated cast-iron bars or stainless steel grates. orcelain-coated cast-iron bars or stainless steel grates is the preferable and recommended choice for effective heat distribution. This method has been gas grill users’ opinion as the best way to distributing heat evenly.

In a similar vain as heat distribution, successful grilling is about temperature control. Being able to control variable temperature settings offers more control in heating that will help improve the grilling process. The flexibility to be able to slow roast and sear is what will set apart a great grill from a good grill. The higher the price of the gas grill, the greater the chance it will have the option to adjust temperature variably and even have separate controls for different burners.

What BTU rating should you be looking for in a gas grill? This is a common question. The answer is simply that BTU isn’t really the most important specification in gas grills on sale. Heat distribution, size, and other options like design and layout are probably more important things to look at. You should definitly look at the BTU rating, but only as a macro indicator of a problem with heating (slow or low heat) with a particular grilling unit as compared to other similar grills.

Now for a more obvious, but often overlooked detail – Grate spacing. If you’ve ever grilled, you’ve had the odd piece of meat or vegetable fall into the fire – a martyr for “the cause”. You can stop this before it happens by choosing a grill with closely spaced grates and possibly bigger rods.

Shelves and warming racks in gas grills on sale is definitely a convenient option to have. Slicing and cutting veggies or prepping marinade sauces are the perfect activities for a gas grill shelf. You can also use them to store other secret and special ingredients and all your beloved grilling tools. Toasting buns or re-heating burger patties are best done on warming racks without disturbing the other things on your grill.

Want the closest experience to a full kitchen outside? Add a side burner to your gas grill setup. Anything that can’t be grilled, but are pivotal to your meal can be cooked and prepared on the side burner; such as boiling vegetables or making various side dishes. Side burners are definitely an added cost in gas grills, so figure out if you really need one. If you’re only going to grill on your grill, then save your money for other grill goodies like the suggestions in the next paragraph!

Lastly, make sure keep other essential, grilling accessories in mind. You’ll need a liquid propane tank (sold separately, most of the time), gas grill cover (for outdoor storage), wire brush, and other tools like tongs, etc… (nice sets are widely available).

Whichever gas grill you choose, make sure you evaluate the options that you truly need. Make a list, check it twice, and go out and start shopping and comparing grills with the information you’ve read here. With a budget in mind and knowing the options you need, you’ll have no problem in your search for gas grills on sale!

The term “gourmet” is typically defined as “purporting to involve high-quality or exotic ingredients and skilled preparation”. The briefer, common-sense synonyms for the word include “fancy” and “specialty”. All things considered, basically this is a term that, to the aspiring cook, suggests the preparation of something extraordinary, such as a spectacular pasta entree, zesty and unusual snack foods, or singularly jubilant cookies or tortes.

Gourmet cooking can be done in the home as well as at a restaurant. What is the center of gourmet cooking is the motivation of the gourmet and not necessarily where it is prepared. The motivation comes from wanting to impress others with a visual appeal and a cooking style that will make the dish its own entity and entice the pallet. It will be something that you would want to purchase or give to someone else clearly because of the perfection and the mastery of the final dish.

Gourmets use a wide variety of ingredients that appeal to your stomach as well as your soul. Whether it is the traditional main dishes or appetizers, gourmet ingredients can be added to make gourmet salsas, gourmet sauces, pumpkin fettuccine, and homemade spinach pasta just to name a few. All ingredients come from a gourmet with discriminating taste in food and wine. The foods may also represent cultural favorites such as family recipes prepared in a tantalizing manner to make even the pickiest pallet yearn for more.

Individual item gourmet snacks have really exploded in popularity in recent years. These can range from the very large variety of potato chips now available (everything from gorgonzola to spicy Thai), to cheese sticks in flavors like pimento, Tuscan Swiss, and sourdough cheddar.

Naturally, there are some well-worn faves that have endured over the years, particularly the plethora of scrumptious gourmet desserts. You can Google search a ton of recipes for gourmet cheesecakes, with flavors like cool lime, caramel apple, and honey/peanut butter, and that only skims the top of possibilities. You can also find literally thousands of gourmet cookie recipes, including such delights as French butter, fruity sugar cookies, chocolate mint creams, and an endless variety of chocolate and peanut butter variations.

Gourmet food items have been very popular throughout the years. Items can be bought for cooking at home but they are extremely popular for bringing to friends parties, open houses and just as a reminder of your thoughtfulness. Look at the tastes of the person that you are offering the food to and tailor it to their likes and desires. As noted above, those recipes are easily found and once you get the hang of it, gourmet treats can be made in a snap!

Not only does gourmet food preparation encompass a wide array of victuals, but it also includes various related items. There is no dearth of cook books with a gourmet slant, as well as a ton of periodicals treating gourmet foods and their recipes (with mouth-watering full-color photography and meticulous cooking instruction). You can also find whole websites devoted to gourmet cuisine and making available the recipes for such dishes. Don’t forget the very popular gourmet food baskets which are appropriate for just about any occasion. These may provide the greatest variety for your money, as you can find baskets that can contain anything from recipes and exotic ingredients to succulent, taste-tempting gourmet entrees and dessert treats.

So don?t limit your gourmet taste to searching out a five star restaurant. Get your motivation in gear and read what you can do on your own with just a few changes and additions to your basic recipes. A few tricks and an eye for appeal can make all the difference in your discriminating pallet and the pallet of others around you.

Here is a quick reference guide to refreshing your awareness of safe food preparation. Pointers and information to always keep in mind when preparing food or storing it away for future use.

Most conscientious cooks use common sense when preparing or storing food. But common sense in food preparation doesn’t just happen, it is learned. This learning happens and when we forget where we learned it, we call it common sense.

Here are just a few pointers to refresh and reinforce your common sense as you are preparing your current meal or storing it for future use.

Food safety actually starts with your excursion to the shops. Pick up the packaged or canned foods. Do the cans have dents? Don’t buy them. Is the jar cracked? Leave it. Does the lid seem loose or bulging? Pick up another. Look for any expiration dates on the labels, they are there for a reason. Never buy outdated food, even if it is on special. Check the “use by” or “sell by” date on dairy products and pick the ones that will stay fresh the longest. Sometimes they may be at the back of the shelves.

After food shopping shopping, put food into the refrigerator or freezer right away. Better yet, put your refrigerator foods straight into one of those insulated freezer bags in the shopping cart and in your car.

Make sure to set the refrigerator temperature is set to 40 degrees F and the freezer is set to 0 F. Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared foods, and leftovers within 2 hours. Raw meat, poultry, and seafood should be placed in containers to prevent their fluids from dripping on other foods. Meat fluids could possibly grow harmful bacteria. Eggs always go in the refrigerator.

Always cook food thoroughly until it is done. Red meat should turn brown inside. Chicken, when poked with a fork, should have clear juices. Fish, on the other hand, when poked with a fork, should flake. Cooked egg whites and yolks should be firm and not runny. Be sure to use a food thermometer to check the internal temperatures of your poultry, meat, and other foods. Leave it in long enough to ensure an accurate reading.

Wash your hands and cooking surfaces frequently. Bacteria can be spread quickly so this will ensure that it will not take hold and grow onto your food. A solution of one teaspoon of bleach in one liter of water is all that is needed to sanitize washed surfaces and utensils.

Cooked foods should definitely not be left standing in the kitchen counter or table for more than two hours. And if you must leave them out of the fridge, cover the food so insects can’t rest on it. Bacteria tends to grow in temperatures between 40 and 140 deg F.

Foods that have been cooked ahead and cooled should be reheated to at least 165 deg F. (This just so happens to be one of the most overlooked areas in food prep).

Chill Leftover Food Promptly. Place food in the refrigerator and don’t overfill. The cold air needs to circulate freely to keep food safe. Divide the food and place in shallow containers. Think about date labeling some of these containers so you don’t lose track of how long they’ve been refrigerating.

These are just a few suggestions that you already know, but need to keep remembering. If you follow these basics you will avoid most food spoilage problems.

If you dread the thought of cooking in a hot kitchen through the summer, you need to consider barbecuing. Sure, you can cook your food indoors on an electric grill, but the tastiest way to get the true flavor and aroma of BBQ is through outdoor cooking. You can choose from a charcoal or gas grill, or maybe you prefer a smoker. Some of the best BBQ tips recommend using marinades, rubs and sauces to add zest to your cooking. There are various internet sites and cookbooks loaded with recipes for barbeque cooking. Any way you grill it up, though, the end result will be delectable.

There are several different bases that are used for a BBQ sauce, and they each lend their own distinctive flavor to the food you’re cooking. There are sauces based on tomato, mustard, vinegar or even fruit. You can also try using a sauce to marinate the meat before cooking. There are also marinades and sauces that are applied during the cooking process. Finally, there’s a sauce used to coat the meat right before taking it off the grill, or to add to the meat when it’s on your plate.

Barbecuing also relies on the use of rubs, frequently in combination with sauce. A barbeque rub is a blend of seasonings that are applied to the surface of the uncooked meat, which then infuse the whole cut while it’s cooking. Rubs tend to remain on the meat and don’t drip off like sauces will. This means they provide more flavor.

Try using all three forms of flavoring in combination to get the best taste possible. For example, marinate the meat for a full day then apply the rub. Once the meat is on the grill and cooking, use some sauce to enhance the flavor and tenderness.

Also, there is more than one way to barbeque. Indoor cooking on a grill is always a possibility. An outdoor grill, though, will give you loads more flavor due to the effect of the smoke from the flame. You can choose between a charcoal grill, which gives it a more authentic flavor, or a gas grill. Either way, consider using wood chips. The meat gets a flavor boost due to the aromatic smoke produced by the wood chips while cooking.

Keep in mind that barbeque cooking sometimes takes longer than indoor cooking. Some things will be fast, like hot dogs or hamburgers. But if you’re planning on serving up something like ribs or roast, you’ll need to cook on low heat for a long period of time to get the best results.
