Not sure how to get started with foolproof foil packet cooking? No problem. Here are some handy and helpful hints that will have you cooking like a gourmet pro in no time flat.

The idea of using foil packets when cooking is to make a tidy little meal. You can throw your foil packets in the oven for a quick family night dinner. If you are short on time, try assembling your foil packets before you head out for the day. When you get home, all you will have to do is place them in the oven to cook. You can also take foil packages when you go camping. You can use the same method and store the packets in a cooler. When it is time to eat, basically place your foil packets on your fire, and you have a nice and satisfying meal in a short time.

Pack the packets carefully: When you get ready to prepare your packets, do remember that raw vegetables take time to cook. Therefore, your best bets are to use vegetables that are sliced thin. Potatoes, onions, carrots & celery all work well for foil packet cooking. Also, make sure that you prepare the packets so that the ingredients do not poke holes in to the foil. When you get ready to close your packet, make sure you mold the foil closely to the food.

Use steam & foil: Foil packets cook using steam. You will place your ingredients in the middle of a large square of foil (12 x 18 works well) & tightly seal the edges & ends. As the food cooks, your food will steam. You will have to be very careful when you open the packets. The steam can easily burn your hands. In addition, because the foil will generate the steam, you require to make sure that the steam does not escape during cooking. The best way to do this is to use a very heavy-duty brand of foil. If you do not have that on hand, try using four layers of foil.

Consider the meat: Virtually any kind of meat can be used in foil packets. However, for practical purposes, you should choose meats that are not frozen (defrost first!) and are thin. You can easily cook a boneless, skinless chicken breast using the foil packet system. Try pounding the chicken first. Another nice option for foil packet cooking includes cube steaks.

Assemble ahead of time:  You are busy. So, why not get a step ahead on your cooking. You can prepare your foil packets in advance and keep them in the refrigerator. Be careful when using raw meats, and remember that these do not keep long. It is actually better when you make them in advance because it gives your meat time to marinade in the seasonings that you choose.

Choose your seasoning: You can go way beyond plain salt & pepper when you make foil packets for dinner. How about adding a little butter & garlic. Or, try finding a flavored marinade at the grocery store, such as chipotle marinade or lemon? Plain Italian salad dressing also makes a perfect seasoning for foil packets. Simple place your chicken on the foil, top with vegetables of your choice and add the dressing. When you seal tightly and cook, the chicken will have a delicious and fragrant flavor with very little effort involved.

Go beyond meat & ‘taters: Foil packets are popular on camping trips. How about considering recipes that do not need using raw meat? You can use sliced hot dogs and beans in a foil packet. How about making a cheese quesadilla? Fill the tortilla; cover the foil with cooking spray, wrap, and heat. How about desserts? Use a banana and cover with chocolate chips & small marshmallows. When you cook with foil packets, the possibilities are countless.
